Name paintings

My friend Natalie from our days in Kirksville, Missouri for med school contacted me and asked me to do name paintings for her three kids. First of all I was super flattered that all these years later she remembered me and my work, second I was excited to do a name painting in oil for the first time. The Jonnie painting is in oil.  Using oils is so different and so fun.  I hope her kids like them. It's hard to make these so that they will grow up with the kids. You never know what they are going to like in 5 years!

Anthro inspiration

It's not a good art trip without a trip to Anthropology.. am I right or am I right or am I right?  :)

Liz Tran in Seattle

Paul and I got to go to a conference in Seattle this weekend. I have been a long time fan of the artist Liz Tran. I had recently learned that she was being featured in the Seattle Art Museum, so I insisted that we go see her work which happened to be in the cafe of the museum which was very lucky since we did not have time to go through the whole museum. Her work is even more amazing in person. I drooled. I was in awe. Amazing. Paul was a good sport to play along.  One day, I'll buy and not just drool.

Lily pad painting finally done! ... or is it?

I finally found the dining set that says home to me. It was $80 on Craigslist for all 6 Chairs! I almost died.

And, I finally finished this lily pad painting that has been unfinished in my house for about 10 years. I'm tempted to put giant hot pink letters over it or yellow sun spots shining through or something crazy. I'm bored with it? Any thoughts?

A Marla Baggetta painting of my own!

Paul bought me our first piece of original artwork this year for our 11th anniversary. I have loved Marla Baggetta's art for ages and I knew I was going to see her at Art in the Pearl. Being at her booth choosing a piece that I would get to take home and hang in my house was surreal. I had such a hard time picking. It turns out, I probably would have liked any that we picked. I love mine.

Art night at Kaaren's house

I feel so blessed. I have met up with some wonderful artist women! I feel like I have been in drought for art friends for years and being with them is SO refreshing. I feel so alive and validated in their presence. Look at this amzing studio of famous artist Kaaren Pixton. She invented the indestructible books printed collages on Tyvek that is strong enough that babies can chew on them and they won't tear or get destroyed. It's brilliant. She invites women over once a month to create. On this night we did life drawing and my son volunteered to be the model. He was incredible. He loved holding the poses and being super dramatic. I got some great drawings actually.  All the ladies took a break to get drinks and Joren kept holding the pose. We told him to take a break and he insisted on standing there. He said through clenched teeth, "You're missing it!" He was so fun to have at art night! Love him!

Clay Day at Kaaren's - a perfect day

Kaaren, the angel on the right with the clay colored clothes on, invited us to make clay projects at her house on a beautiful summer afternoon. We brought our kids and they played in the sprinklers and gardens. They explored all the magical crevices of her yard including her 100 year old tree with magical 3 story tree house. I wished the day would never end and in fact, I went back after dinner to finish my totem I was making. I worked at it ferociously all day to get it done. I made an animal to represent each person in our family and spacer shapes to go between each. You can see Pamela and Christy in these photos too. 3 of my favorite women in Oregon! What a glorious summer day!

My new bathroom

I have the loveliest bathroom in my new house. I wanted the decorations to really reflect me and what I like. I decided to use my clothes and jewelry as a starting off point. I picked out all my very favorite jewelry and realized it was all tourquoise, wood and pearls. Hmmmm.. I think we can go with that. It was hard to choose between gold and silver, but I ended up using gold and brass accents, mainly because I had the awesome butterflies I have been hoarding for years. Now they will finally have a home. This room has become a funny kind of mix of my love of all things rustic and southwest along with some luxurious and fine touches like the pearls and fur. Just touches though.. not too much. I did find the best shower curtain that is like dripping pearls. So pretty with all the wood. Finished photos to come.

Shark Attack

This might be the only art I made this month, but the kids liked it.

Relief Society Birthday Dinner

Christy Russell and I put together the decorations for the Relief Society Birthday Celebration Dinner this year. We called it, "A Place to Grow." Christy was very kind to let me run with my odd ideas. She is the wonderful Chalk artist. Sadly, I had to miss the event, but it was fun to get ready for.

Birthday cakes abound in March

Cakes count as art right? Juni's 1st birthday cake was a log with meringue mushrooms and fondant flowers.

Eirik's 8th birthday was a camping party so he had to have a private campground for his cake, of course.

Decorating at home

I bought a new rug and I love it from above. My home that does not feel at all like my home is getting a little better. You can also see our Christmas helicopters enjoying the height of our ceiling.
